I like to use my portraits to do more than simply depict the likeness of a person, but to also show other facets of their personality and highlight important things in their lives.

Ann is a woman of many talents, some of which I show in the background of her portrait. She is a wonderful watercolor painter. I depict some of her little still life’s as the two cups and spoon on the table, as well as the toad which I display on her vest as a patch.

She also takes cotton fabric and sews into patterns then dyes with indigo. Examples are on the neckline trim of her shirt and the pillow to the left.

She is a framer, mostly art pieces, which I show as a frame around her head.

Last, but certainly not least, she plays the fiddle occasionally with a blue grass band. The fiddle shown here was made in Galway, Ireland.

Pam is a fiber artist. She takes raw fiber (wool), dyes it, then twists it into yarn using the device you see here. She will weave various color yarns she makes on one of her looms into scarves or shawls. She also crochets like one of the art pieces that you see in the background.

Grace is a volunteer here at Public Works Art Center. She is also a knitter and crocheter. I depict her wearing a shawl that she made.

She also does three dimensional work, knitting around three dimensional forms, such as the llama and snowman in the background.
